今年度の課題は、頬を寄せ合うマリアと幼子キリストを描いたエレウサ型聖母子像が、バルカン半島およびキプロスでどのように受容されたのか、そしてイコンにおける同類型について検討することである。8月にマケドニア共和国(旧ユーゴスラヴィア)の19聖堂、2月に南キプロスの35聖堂を対象に、それぞれ1ヶ月に渡るフィールド・ワークを行った。その結果、研究や出版の遅れによりこれまで公表されてこなかった、エレウサ型聖母子像を新たに10例確認した。この研究を通して、中期(9〜13世紀)には聖堂の主要壁面を飾っていたエレウサ型が、後期(14〜15世紀)になると、南西扉口上、あるいはより私的な意味合いの高い壁面に描かれる傾向にあることが分かった.この調査結果は、キプロス調査での写真を整理・分析を待って、美術史学会や地中海学会などで積極的に発表していきたい。昨年度の調査から継続して各地のビザンティン博物館(アテネ、テサロニキ、ヴェリア、カストリア、スコピエ、オフリド、ニコシア)にて、イコンの撮影を行った。これまで構築したデータベースから抽出した作例と比較検討した結果、エレウサ型とこれに準じて受難の意味が付加された聖母子像には、受難具を手にする天使、あるいは布や外衣で手を覆う天使が伴う傾向にあることが判明した。この成果は2007年4月7日(土)に早稲田大学で開催される、第5回日本ビザンツ学会大会で「聖母子像にともなう天使の役割」という題目の下、口頭発表を行う予定である。
