项目摘要

本研究は、日本社会における社会変容の過程を、土地をめぐる出来事に照準することによって、これまでとは異なった視点で整理しようとするものである。日本近代における社会変容のもっとも中心的なメカニズムは「消費社会変容」と言える。この研究を進めるために、本研究では、東京・日比谷に焦点を定め、具体的な出来事の歴史的な過程を実証的に明らかにしてきた。その結果、理論的な研究として、次の成果を挙げた。従来の通説では、日本社会における「消費社会変容」の到来の時点をどこに求めるかが争われてきた。本研究では、これまでの消費社会論の理論を詳細に検討するとともに、W・ベンヤミンの議論を導入することによって、この争点に一定の解決を与えた。それは、消費社会変容の到来を判断する基準を、これまでのように所得や生活水準といった国民経済上の指標ではなく、時間や空間に関する社会的な感覚の変容に求める解決である。その結果、通説は根本的な再検討を迫るともに、新たに統一的な知見を提供することに成功した。同時に、そこで言う「時間や空間に関する社会的な感覚」について、東京・日比谷における具体的な現象を通じて、その論理構造を明らかにした。特に、関東大震災が及ぼした影響、その結果出現してきた、新しい建築環境や娯楽産業、生活様式に焦点を当て、消費社会変容を被った感覚を「神話的な感覚」と名づけた。一連の成果は、後掲11.の論文「「東京」の記憶:昭和零年代「東京」の消費社会と災厄」にまとめ公刊することができた。また、並行して、消費社会変容の前史に当たる20世紀の世紀の変わり目をめぐる分析と、消費社会変容の浸透過程にあたる高度成長期をめぐる分析を進め、さまざまな研究会等で報告を行なった。現在、その成果を公刊できるように努力しているところである。
