ヒトは、生後1年半から2年ごろに、鏡に映る自分の姿を「自分である」と認識するようになる。この結果は、ヒトが、自己を他者と区別して認識する能力が獲得された有力な証拠として位置づけられている。しかし、通常の鏡映像を理解できるはずの3歳児でも、2秒の遅延をはさんだ自己映像を見せると、それを自分であると認識することは困難となる(宮崎,2003)。つまり、自己映像を理解には、時間的随伴性という要因が大きく影響すると考えられる。鏡映像を理解できるのは、ヒトだけではない。チンパンジーをはじめとするヒト以外の大型類人猿も鏡に映った自分の像を、「自分である」と認識することができる。しかし、その他の霊長類については、そうした証拠は得られていない。本研究では、チンパンジー(Pan troglodytes)、フサオマキザル(Cebus apella)、ヒト乳児(Homo sapiens)を対象として、自己像を理解する能力の進化史的・発達的起源を探ること、その際、この能力の獲得を時間要因との関連において調べることを目的とした。実験条件として、(1)0.5、(2)1.0、(3)2.0秒遅延させた自己映像を、それぞれの個体に2分間、呈示した。各条件での像呈示の前後には、ベースラインとして通常の像をそれぞれ2分間呈示した。その結果、1)チンパンジーの成体は、身体の動きと自己映像が時間的に随伴しない状況でも、経験を積めば自己像であると認知する、2)フサオマキザルの成体は、モニターから遠ざかる、威嚇など激しい攻撃を加える、身体を頻繁にかきむしるなど、通常の鏡映像の場合よりも強い社会的反応を示す、3)ヒト乳児も通常の鏡映像と遅延する自己像を区別できており、遅延する自己像に微笑む、声をあげるなどより強い興味を示すこと、が明らかとなった。以上より、自己と他者の弁別能力の発達と進化においては、自己受容感覚-視覚間の時間的な同期性(随伴性)の認知が重要な要因であることが示唆された。

The development and evolution of the ability to distinguish between oneself and others are important factors in the cognition of the synchronicity of the time between oneself and others.
