近年、胃食道逆流症患者は急激に増加している。この疾患は酸分泌抑制薬による薬物療法が長期間あるいは生涯にわたって必要である。本研究は、重炭酸を添加したチューインガムを使用することにより食道内のpHが有意に上昇すること、さらに食道下部の酸暴露時間を62%低下させることを示した。この研究により、安価で国民的嗜好品の一つであるガムによる非薬物療法で胃食道逆流症の治療が可能であることが明らかとなった。
