Using Newman's theory of health, a helping model with 20 nursing students who wished to quit smoking in a student-teacher partnership was developed. If smoking is a manifestation of person-environment interaction pattern, a person who recognizes their own patterns can evolve new life patterns. The model created was to do just this. Students were encouraged to talk about meaningful relationships in their lives and to continue this dialogue over a period of time. Two similarities were found : participants' difficult relationships in their lives and habit of smoking gained in search of friends. Once recognizing their own patterns, these patterns quickly changed in terms of eating, studying, and relating to people as well as their smoking patterns. Helpfulness of this model for nursing students was suggested by students changing their daily patterns and capturing the meanings of nursing and talking about their future hopes.

运用纽曼的健康理论，开发了一个帮助20名希望戒烟的护生的模式。如果吸烟是人与环境互动模式的一种表现，那么一个认识到自己模式的人可以进化出新的生活模式。创建的模型就是为了做到这一点。学生们被鼓励谈论他们生活中有意义的关系，并在一段时间内继续这种对话。研究发现了两个相似之处：参与者在生活中的艰难关系以及在寻找朋友的过程中养成的吸烟习惯。一旦认识到自己的模式，这些模式很快就会在饮食、学习、与人的关系以及吸烟模式方面发生变化。学生改变日常生活方式，领会护理的意义，畅谈未来的希望，这对护生来说是很有帮助的。
