東京女子医科大学脳神経センターにおいて前頭葉損傷患者を対象として日常に存在する系列行為(例:お茶入れ)における前頭葉の役割を調べた。方法は、日常に存在する系列行為課題(例:お茶入れ)を実施した。ターゲット課題とディストラクター課題を設定し、各課題に用いられる実物品を両方ランダムに同時提示し、ターゲット課題を行うように教示がなされた(実験1)。たとえば、ターゲット課題が「お茶入れ」であり、ディストラクター課題が「コーヒー入れ」である場合、被験者はコーヒーを入れるのに用いられる物品には手を触れずにお茶入れに必要な物品を適切な段階で選択して用いることができるかどうか、また、必要なステップを抜かさないかどうか、ステップの順番を誤らずに順序良く行えるかどうかが検査された。前頭葉損傷患者は実物品を見るとそれを勝手に使ってしまう道具の強迫的使用という障害が生じることが知られている。そこで実験2では実物品を提示することの影響を抑えるため、系列場面を写真撮影した写真場面の並び替え実験を行った。これらの2つの実験を左半球前頭葉損傷患者(1名)、右半球前頭葉損傷患者(4名)、および健常大学生(8名)に実施した。健常大学生は産業技術総合研究所にてデータの収集が行われた。その結果、右半球前頭葉損傷患者にのみディストラクター物品を使用してしまうという結果が得られた。ディストラクター物品の使用はそのままディストラクターを使用してしまうのではなく、ターゲット課題の内部に沿った形で用いられた。これはディストラクター物品の使用を抑制できない結果、ターゲット課題のゴールに沿って物品の使用の再解釈がなされた結果を反映していると考えられた。ここから、右半球では不必要な物品の使用の抑制、および行動のゴールに向かって最短かつ最適な行為を導くための行為のステップの組み立てがなされている可能性が示唆された。
