本研究では幼児期のメディア利用について(1)現行の幼児向けメディア機器のインタフェースデザインと操作性について、(2)一般的なPCがどの時期から利用可能かを、幼児向け機器からの移行教育のための基礎的研究を目的に調査している。まず、研究1では、現行の幼児向け機器としてS社製およびE社製の幼児向けコンピュータをサンプルに、デスクトップの構成調査とユーザビリティ検証を初期利用者を対象に行った。主な結果は、S社製については基本的にペンタブレットの操作スタイルであることから、初期利用者にとってユーティリティ性、習熟容易性に優れているが、モニタ画面と操作パネルの視点移動頻度は少なく操作パネルに長く注視しやすいことが確認された。一方、E社製については、マウス及びキーボードによる操作で各アイテムに子ども向けキャラクターデザインが利用されていることから長時間利用が好まれていたが、習熟までの視点移動頻度が高いこと、アイコン選択などのマウス操作にプレなどの誤操作が見られた。次に、入力デバイスの操作性について、マウス、ペンタブレット、および手描きによる円描写の操作内容を実験的に比較検討した。その結果、カーソルを始点へ同定させる所要時間がマウスはペンタブレットやクレヨンよりも多く要すること、円模写の軌跡からマウスとペンタブレットでは異なる部分で操作が困難となることなどが確認された。一方、研究2では、デスクトップ上のフォルダとファイルの操作、フォルダの階層性の理解について調査を行った。その結果、3歳児の場合、上位階層において階層性が視認できるデザインであれば内包される対象が特定できるが、フォルダの内包性が視認できず、かつ下位層でもフォルダデザインに変化がない場合、3階層以上のファイル特定は困難であるが、フォルダの色ラベリングの効果によりファイル特定が可能になるケースもあったことなどが確認された。
