本研究の目的は、大学に所属する外国人留学生および研究者の配偶者の適応に関する調査を行い配偶者の適応・不適応の原因をさぐりつつ、大学や地域が彼らに対してどのような支援体制をとるべきかを、検討・提案することである。平成18年度は、平成17年度に行った大学担当者や配偶者を対象とするボランティア、大阪大学および神戸大学の配偶者数名への面接で得た、彼らの属性や生活についての問題点(日本語や医療など)を元にアンケート項目の作成を行った。これらのデータ及び研究者がこれまで蓄積した知識を元にアンケート項目を設定、統計に詳しい者と協議しながら、アンケートを完成させた。アンケートは、日本語で作成したものを英語・中国語・韓国語に翻訳した。それぞれネイティブスピーカーに翻訳を依頼し、中国語・韓国語については、バックトランスレーションを行い、正しく翻訳されているか、チェックを行った。質問項目は、属性、大学および地域からの支援(日本語講座、相談の機会、交流活動)の有無やそれらについての参加の有無、必要としている具体的支援内容、適応尺度、性格を図る尺度である。3極類の言語版、依頼文、切手付返却用封筒を入れたものを1セットとし、各々配偶者に配布、回答者(配偶者)が受け取り後、言語を選択し、返信用封筒に入れて投函するようにした。アンケートの配布にあたっては、国際交流担当者のMLや個人的にアンケート配布の協力を依頼した。東北地方、関東地方、関西地方、九州地方など、あわせて約600部を配布、121のアンケートを回収した。滞日期間については、ばらつきがみられ、日本語、子供、求人などについての支援や情報を必要としていることが明らかになった。母国ではフルタイムであった者が多かったが、日本では無職である者がかなりの数にのぼり、早い時期に適応するためには、日本語能力(上級)向上の支援、求人情報の提供、などが大学及び地域から来日時に行われるべきであると考えられる。
