開発したニッケル/炭素触媒を用いて、難燃性の有機塩素化合物の触媒水熱ガス化を実施したところ、300℃程度でほぼ完全にガス化することができたが、時間とともに触媒であるニッケルがシンタリングし、活性の低下が見られた。この原因としては、ガス化時に塩素が塩化水素となり、液が酸性になるためだと考えられた。そのため、廃水に水酸化ナトリウムを添加したところ、270℃で50時間にわたって活性を維持することができ、有機塩素化合物を効率よくガス化できる方法であることを明らかにした。
