本研究は、中世から近世にかけて、葬送墓制がどのように変化したか、またその背景にある社会の変化を探るべく、考古学・民俗学・文献史学の3者の立場から共同研究を行った。その結果、17世紀初頭に中世的な墓制が転換、17世紀後半には寺檀制度の成立と村落社会の成熟を背景として近世的な葬送墓制が成立すること、また、これが1870年代を境として現在に続くものへと変化することが判明した。

This study is a joint research from the standpoint of three aspects: archaeology, folklore and literature history. As a result, the medieval tomb system was replaced in the early 17th century, and the modern tomb system was established in the second half of the 17th century against the background of the establishment of the temple sandalwood system and the maturity of village society. This makes it clear that the situation in the 1870s has changed and evolved now.
