研究期間中に行われた調査研究から,以下の点が明らかにされた。友人関係の進展過程においてアメリカ人はその成功を努力によるものだと認知しているのに対して,日本人は友人関係の進展は自然に進行すると認知していた。アメリカ人は友人関係の崩壊は,関係継続の努力をしなかったり,お互いの考え方が違ったからなど,必ず何らかの原因をそこに見出しているが,日本人は関係の崩壊においても,それは自然にそうなったと認知する傾向が強かった。こうした研究の結果から,友人関係の形成に対して,アメリカ人は「友人を作る(make friends)」と認識しているのに対して,日本人は「友人になる(become friend)」と認識していることが明らかにされた。
