本研究の目的は、能力の可変性に関する信念である暗黙理論の文化差が生成・維持されるメカニズムを検討することである。暗黙理論はモチベーションの維持を通じて、私たちの課題達成に影響を与えるため、それが文化的に生成・維持されるメカニズムは心理学で明らかにすべき重要な問題である。この目的に則し、暗黙理論を持つことの行動的・認知的帰結をより詳細に明らかにするため、２つの実験を実施した。実験１では、複数課題場面において、能力を可変的に捉える増加理論者は特定の課題に努力を注力し熟達することで成果の最大化を図る（課題熟達方略）一方、能力を固定的に捉える実体理論者は適性のある課題を探索することで成果の最大化を図る（適性探索方略）という仮説を検証した。課題の選択肢が複数あり、取り組む課題を選ぶために課題の中身を「観察」する機会と、課題の練習を行う「熟達」の機会があるとき、成果を最大化するためにどちらの機会を多く取るかを観察した。この時、「観察」機会と「熟達」機会をとる回数の合計を20回と定め、どちらか一方の機会を多く取ろうとすると、もう一方の機会が減ってしまうトレードオフ構造にした。実験の結果、実体理論的傾向が強い参加者ほど観察する機会を多く、増加理論的傾向が強い参加者ほど熟達の機会を多くとっていることが明らかになり、仮説を支持する結果が得られた。実験２では、実体理論者は努力を成長の資源として重視しないとされてきた従来の知見に対して、彼らが課題に選択肢がある場面で、適性のある課題を判断するための情報として努力を重視する可能性を検討した。この予測を支持する結果が得られた一方で、増加理論者も努力を情報として捉える傾向を一部示しており、努力を成長の資源として重視する増加理論者と、努力を適性評価の情報として重視する実体理論者、という二項対立的な分類は必ずしも適切でない可能性が示唆された
