人は、自己や他者に関する行動特性情報(「親切な」、「気難しい」など)を記憶内に貯蔵している。人の行動は、相手(父、母、友人等)の行動によって変化する面があるので、自己と他者の行動特性情報は、それぞれ独立して存在するのではなく、ある他者の特性情報とその他者と対応する自己の特性情報という形式で、結びつきがあると考えられる。実験結果はこの考えを支持し、自己の特性定義にとって身近な他者が1つの条件になっており、自己の特性情報は他者を条件として分化した面をもつことが示唆された。
