イタリア・ルネサンス期の理想都市理論が、16世紀ドイツを中継し、ネーデルランドにおいて独自の風土に対応させられて、グリッドプランと水路網による都市計画理論へと推移した過程の概略を明らかにした。ネーデルランドでは中世以来の水路を媒介とする都市・集落形成方法が、16世紀後期に幾何学的な原理に昇華され、他方で空間を数学的、科学的に把握し、操作、デザインする手法が確立し、その建築デザイン、都市計画の理論がバルト海沿岸地域、またアメリカ大陸に及ぶ筋道もまた明らかにした。
