Self-administered questionnaires, including the GHQ-12, the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire, and the Family, Community Stressful Life Event Questionnaire were completed by 682 employees of manufacturing companies in Nagasaki Prefecture in order to investigate the factors related to mental health deterioration.Workers were classified as having mental health deterioration if they had total GHQ-12 scores〓4 points, while those with scores less than 4 points were considered mentally healthy. According to this definition, 28.0% of the workers had mental health deterioration. The relationship of each factor to mental health deterioration was analyzed. When compared to mentally healthy workers, workers with mental health deterioration had significantly greater stress in work responsibility, control over work, workplace interpersonal relationship, job suitability, psychological stress reaction, depression, physical stress reaction, workplace support, spousal support, job satisfaction, family life satisfaction, and family and community stressful life events.Next, occupational stress factors were compared between full-time and part-time workers and between day-shift workers and rotating-shift workers. Full-time workers had significantly greater stress in family and community stressful life events and psychological stress reactions. However, part-time workers had significantly greater stress in control over work, job suitability and workplace support. Also, day-shift workers had significantly greater stress in family and community stress life events, but rotating-shift workers had significantly greater stress in control over work, job suitability and workplace support.
