本研究では、これまで民族音楽学的研究の対象になってこなかったハラールにおけるイスラム宗教礼Zikriに焦点をしぼり、実証研究のための資料の収集と音楽学的分析をおこなうとともに、ハラール人の日常的生活における社会的文脈の観点から儀礼の場面をテキスト化して分析をおこなった。さらにハラールの人々と共有した分析結果を映像記録資料とともに現地の公文書館に保存する準備をおこなった。ハラールではイスラム的音楽伝統のほか、籠作り、金銀細工、製本、木彫、刺繍、螺鈿などの工芸文化が多数保持されている。このような伝統の映像による記録と保全活動も視野に入れ、京都大学のエチオピア研究グループと協力して調査研究活動をおこなった。本研究の意義は、伝統の記録と保全だけでなく地域研究手法を用いたハラール人社会の社会的・文化的文脈の理解をすすめることによって、イスラム宗教音楽研究に新知見を提供し、アフリカ地域研究における地域的、分野的空隙を埋めることにあった。2年度目は、東部エチオピア、ハラール地域における音楽的伝統の文化資源としての役割に関する研究成果のまとめをおこなった。その成果はドイツ・ハンブルグ大学との共同出版として交渉中である。同時に、初年度同様、研究分担者が日本ナイル・エチオピア学会、日本アフリカ学会において、本研究プロジェクトの成果発表をおこなった。またノルウェーにて7月に開催された第16回国際エチオピア研究学会における発表は論文として投稿した。成果の一部は、受入機関が出版する国際学術雑誌African Study Monographsにも投稿した。国際大会に先立ってエチオピアにて開催されるエチオピア研究学会にも参加し、地元アジスアベバ大学における同分野の研究者との意見交換をおこなった。また、受入研究機関では民族音楽学のフォーラムを開催し、若手研究者に対する同分野への関心を高めた。
