今年度は、ペンシルヴェニア州都ハリスバーグにあるペンシルヴェニア州立図書館での長期にわたる資料収集を続行した。これにより、19世紀のアメリカにおけるカウンティ政党組織の指名方法の解明という研究目的のための事例研究であるペンシルヴェニアに関する調査をほぼ終了した。調査では、地方政党組織が発行していた新聞のマイクロフィルムから、全67カウンティのほとんどの二大政党による指名方法に関する資料を収集した。これには、党大会の告知、議事録、タウンシップ単位の選挙結果も含まれる。指名方法に関しては、多くのカウンティにおいて、タウンシップごとにカウンティ党大会に代表を送る代議員制から、政党支持者による直接投票である直接予備選挙へと制度が移行していく様子を追い、このふたつ以外にも試された様々な制度を捕捉することで、ある州における政党候補者指名制度の発達過程の全貌を見渡そうとする試みである。この調査は新聞記録が遡れる限界までカバーしているので、古いカウンティでは19世紀初頭から100年間あまりの指名活動をカバーしており、アメリカ民主主義の源と言われる地方政治に関する貴重な歴史資料となる。現在これをデータベース化する作業を行っており、これをもとに事例研究や統計処理を含む様々な分析を行って2008年夏までにいちど研究成果をまとめる予定である。膨大な時間がかかる調査であったため、補助金を支給されている期間に資料収集を最大限進めることを優先した。そのため、今年度は学会などにおける成果発表はできなかったが、科学研究費補助金がなければ絶対にできなかったであろう長期の資料収集を徹底的に遂行することができたので、当初の目的は果たせたと考えている。
