社会性昆虫で散見される無性的生殖の進化機構とそれがこれら昆虫の社会行動に与える影響を理論・実証両面で研究した。主な成果は、アミメアリにおける同種の労働に寄生する利己的単為生殖系統の発見と、ヤマトシロアリにおいて女王が自身の死後コロニーの繁殖を引き継ぐ補充女王に自身の遺伝的なコピーを単為生殖で残していることの発見である。これらは社会性昆虫が性の進化の好研究材となることを示す。
