本研究は複数の植民地と日本内地の構造的関連性を横断的に捉えようとする「帝国史」という研究トレンドを出発点として、その植民地的転換を試みるものである。かつて台湾や朝鮮での自国近代史研究は母国の統治者と植民地の民衆という関係だけが注目されたために、その歴史記述はややもすれば、収奪-抵抗という権力図式のなかに陥りがちだった。本研究はそのような研究史を反省する装置として「帝国史」に着目し、東アジア全体を範疇にした帝国版図の多角的な関係模式のなかで、台湾と朝鮮とを位置づけしなおそうとした。同時に、これまで概ね統治制度をその手がかりとしてきた帝国史研究が、上から-あるいは中心から-植民地を見下ろしてきた点を反省し、統治者の立場を代弁する資料を避け、植民地知識人によって発行された植民地メディアを主な検討対象と設定し、植民地から植民地へ向けられたまなざしをつないで、縁辺から帝国版図を描きなおそうとした。ただこのような植民地言説を検討するかぎり、植民地知識人たちのまなざしの先にあったのは、同じ立場に置かれていたもう一方の植民地同士だったというより、母国日本-さもなければ日本同様に世界各地を瓜分していた帝国主義の列強のほうだった。当初の試みとは裏腹に、植民地と植民地をつないで描きあがる帝国の周縁ではなく、その間に存在する断絶と隔離でしか確認できなかったのである。ここで研究は方向転換を余儀なくされ、言説上の断絶を歴史事実として検証するべく、警察資料や統計書はもちろん、引き揚げ文書やオーラルヒストリーまで網羅したうえで、植民地台湾を訪れた朝鮮人と植民地朝鮮を訪れた台湾人-統治者として台湾や朝鮮を行き来していた日本人官僚ではなく-の例外的な事例を追い、人流動線の側面から、母国日本を介在する放射線状の動脈路線を介さないヒトやモノの移動を厳しく抑制していた帝国版図の内部構造を指摘できた。
