本研究は特許保護強化が経済成長や経済厚生にどのような影響を与えるか、動学的一般均衡で分析するもので、具体的には以下の2つの研究を行った。1. TRIPs協定によってWTO加盟国は知的財産権保護を強化することを義務付けられており、発展途上国も国内での特許権保護強化が求められている。発展途上国での特許保護強化は国内の生産を減らしてしまう効果があり、途上国の厚生下げるのではと危惧されているが、この研究では実際に厚生を下げるのか理論的に検証を行った。具体的には新技術を開発する先進国と海外直接投資によって新技術を利用できる発展途上国の2国で構成される動学的一般均衡モデルを構築し、発展途上国での特許保護強化が先進国の技術開発・発展途上国への海外直接投資にどのような影響があるか、さらには各国の厚生にどのような影響があるか分析を行った。その結果、ある緩い条件の下で発展途上国での特許保護強化は先進国の技術開発と発展途上国への海外直接投資を促進し両国の厚生を高める、という結果を得た。既存の動学的一般均衡分析では肝心の厚生分析が行いないのでその点で新しい知見を得たといいえる。2. USなど先進国において、未熟練労働に比べて熟練労働の供給が増加しているにもかかわらず、熟練労働の相対賃金が上昇している傾向がある。論文"Product cycles, endogenous skill acquisition, and wage inequality."(田中仁史氏との共著)では教育選択を内生化した2国世代重複モデルを使って、財生産が先進国から発展途上国に内生的に移転していく過程で上記の現象が発生することを示した。さらにこのモデルを用いて発展途上国での知的財産権保護の強化の効果を分析し、保護強化、すなわち模倣コストの増大は発展途上国への生産拠点移動を抑制し、先進国の国内賃金格差の拡大を弱める影響があること示した。
