本研究では、個人投資家の増加が株主構成や株式流動性に与えた影響を検証し,企業行動について確認を行った。分析の結果,個人株主増加を進める日本企業の特徴などが明らかとなった。以下の3点が今回の研究によって明らかになった中心的な事柄である。1.近年の個人株主増加対策として行われている「くくり直し」「株式分割」が,株主構成における個人株主数を大幅に増加させることが確認された。しかしながら発行済み株式数に対して個人株主の保有が占める比率は、低下している企業が多く存在していることが明らかとなった。また大株主保有比率や特定株主保有比率には大きな変化がない企業が大多数であった。これらの事実から、個人株主増加策としての「くくり直し」や「株式分割」は個人株主数を増加されるものの、議決権ベースでの個人株主全体の重要性には特点の影響を与えていないことが明らかとなった。2.個人株主数が増加した企業の株式流動性に注目すると,東証1部上場企業ではプラス効果,マイナス効果が同程度見られた。それに対して東証2部・東証マザーズ上場企業ではプラス効果が確認された。東証2部・東証マザーズ上場企業では,個人株主増加によって株式流動が改善され、株式売買を通じた企業評価が効率的に行われることが明らかとなった。3.今回のサンプルにおいては、個人株主数の増加と企業の研究開発投資の間には有意な関係が示されなかった。しかしながらこれらの企業では,配当や自社株買いが積極的に行われており,外部への資金流出が研究開発投資に影響を与えた可能性が示された。
