青年に対する批判として「自分らしさの追求とそれへの拘泥」が指摘されている。しかし、自分らしさの追求は青年期の自己形成過程に大きな貢献をすることも否めない。本研究ではこの点に注目し、これを"自己意識の功罪"と呼び、(1)それが特に現代社会において注目される要因について、戦後の社会変動をふまえて明らかにすること、(2)自己意識の"功罪"の分岐点について、特に日本におけるキャリア形成の問題を通して検討すること、に取り組んだ。
