カイラル液晶の螺旋構造に特有な欠陥(カイラルフォトニック欠陥)を導入したナノ周期螺旋構造を有する液晶を構築し、欠陥部位における光局在や群速度異常を利用したレーザー発振などの機能応用を検討した。具体的には、コレステリック液晶の螺旋周期構造を欠陥として含む無機一次元周期構造における高Q値欠陥モードと励起光閉じ込めによるレーザー発振閾値の低減、ならびに、三次元欠陥周期構造を有するコレステリック・ブルー相の安定化とフォトニックバンド構造の理論的解析を行った。
