動脈硬化進展と破綻に関する新規制御機構を明らかにすることを目的とした。特に、従来あまり注目されていなかった、外膜血管新生ならびに動脈周囲の脂肪組織の意義をモデル動物と手術中に得られるサンプルを用いて検討した。血管外周囲脂肪組織は、病的血管リモデリングに対して、通常防御的に機能すると考えられた。血管障害や生活習慣病によって、血管周囲脂肪組織の形質が変化し、内膜増殖や動脈硬化の病態に重要な役割を演ずることが示唆された。
