健診受診者で、腹囲は内臓脂肪面積と同程度に動脈硬化危険因子と相関した。そして腹部肥満が、頸動脈硬化(IMT) のリスクであることを示した。さらに経年的に増悪するIMTには、腹囲の変化が、他のリスク変化より重要であることを示し、保健指導の指標としての腹囲測定の有用性を示した。また外因性リポ蛋白マーカーであるアポB48はIMTとの相関はなかったが、内臓脂肪面積や生活習慣によく相関しており、さらなる検討に値する。
