This research was aimed to reconstruct the establishment process of the Recent flora in the southern part of Aouth America during the Cenozoic, especially focused on the phytogeographic history of Nothofagus (southern beech). During the 1989 field survey, more than 50 specimens of petrified woods, ca. 120 fossil leaves and palynologicalsamples have been collected from XI region of South Chile.Taxonomic studies using these materials have provided many new informations and evidence to the paleobotany of southern South America. By now four species of petrified woods, including three new species have been recognized from Chile Chico samples. Equisetum and Nothofagus leaves have been identified from the Guadal Formation (Oligo-Miocene) and Rio Zeballos Formation (Miocene). About 815 palynomorphs including fern spores, gymnosperm and angiosperm pollen grains have been recovered from Paleocene sediments at Mina Ligorio Marquez. All these materials are still under detailed study.
