部分手がかり抑制とは、目的とする情報と一緒に覚えた情報を手がかりとすることで、何も手がかりがない場合よりもかえって情報の想起が悪くなる現象のことを言う。この現象の説明として、覚えるべき情報の関連性が低い場合には、手がかりとされた情報に注意が引きつけられることで検索抑制が関与し、覚えるべき情報の関連性の高い場合には、手がかりによって最適な検索方略が妨害されてしまうという要因が関与するということを実験的に明らかにした。
