本研究は「治療抵抗性うつ病」の動物モデルの確立を目的に掲げ、一連の研究を通じて「治療抵抗性うつ病」の病態メカニズムの解明および有効な治療薬の作用機序解明を進めた。その結果、下垂体ホルモンであるACTHを反復投与した視床下部-下垂体-副腎皮質系過活動モデルは既存抗うつ薬の効果を減弱させた。その病態にはセロトニン(5-HT)受容体のサブタイプの一つである5-HT2A受容体の機能が関与している可能性が示唆された。また、治療抵抗性うつ病の治療薬として5-HT1A受容体作用薬およびドパミン神経作用薬が有用であることを明らかにした。
