大脳基底核の線条体に含まれるアセチルコリンは試行錯誤で行動するために重要な報酬信号を検出し、思考や意志決定などの高次認知機能に深く関わる可能性が示唆されている。自由意志で行動を企画・実行する課程に線条体のアセチルコリンが寄与するメカニズムを知るために、サル線条体のアセチルコリン受容体の機能脱落実験を行った。その結果、線条体のアセチルコリンが試行錯誤で適切な行動を見つけ出す過程に寄与する結果を得た。線条体のアセチルコリンが、現在の行動の結果を次の行動へと反映させる過程を仲介すると考えられる。
