イエズス会倫理思想と日本布教との相関関係は、キケロを模範とする修辞学が会の中で重要視されていく過程にみることができる。キケロ的修辞法の鍛錬は、会員の神学倫理の解釈に漸次的な変化を生じさせた。すなわちある倫理的事項における善悪の判断が、神学者の見解等の外的権威から、正と"思われること"の承認へ、すなわち、人間の修辞的操作の領域に移行していった。これは、高度な倫理的諸問題の解決を必要とした布教地日本という特殊な事情が必然的に要請した、倫理的変容の在り方であった。
