腸管出血性大腸菌O157(O157)に対する殺菌物質(コリシン)を産生する細菌が腸内で果たす役割を究明することを目的に、ヒト腸内細菌から分離したO157を殺菌するコリシン産生菌について産生している抑制物質の分析を行った。抑制物質の同定を試みた結果、グループAに分類されるコリシンがO157の抑制に主要な役割を果たしていると考えられた。また、一部のコリシンにはO157の病原因子のひとつである志賀毒素の産生量をむしろ増加させる作用があることを見いだし、その機構を明らかにした。腸内細菌の産生物が毒素産生を誘導することは新規の知見であった。
