はじめに、不登校児童生徒を対象にした支援に適したCMSのプロトタイプを作成し、実際の教育現場で不登校支援に関わる教員による評価を行った。その結果、さまざまな追加機能の要望や、また現在の児童生徒の電子メディアに対する実態から、より基礎的な調査や実験を行う必要性が明らかになった。それを踏まえて、これまでの基礎研究で明らかになっていない電子メディアコミュニケーションにおける感情的な側面に関する基礎研究を行い、国内外の学会で広く研究成果を報告した。なお、基礎実験は、倫理面に十分に配慮する理由から、不登校児童生徒を被験者とはせず、大学生・大学院生を被験者として行った。具体的には、4つの感情(悲しみ、喜び、怒り、罪悪)に関する状況におけるテキストベースのコミュニケーションによる感情伝達に関して研究を行った。これらから、相手との親しさによって、自身の感情の表現に違いが生じることなど、不登校児童生徒支援におけるコミュニケーションに対する示唆を得た。
