ポリプテルスは原始的な硬骨魚であり、脊椎動物の進化を探るうえで非常に重要な系統的位置を占める。その初期発生の様子は全割卵で両生類と類似し、盤割卵の真骨魚(一般的な進化した硬骨魚)とは様々な点で異なる。しかしながら、ポリプテルスは全割発生であるにも拘らず、植物極側細胞集団が胚葉に貢献しない点で両生類とも異なる。この特徴は、最も原始的な現生脊椎動物であるヤツメウナギでも保存されており、ポリプテルス様の初期発生機構は脊椎動物の祖先型と考えられる。
