早期英語教育の意義について、大学生の回顧的ナラティブ分析を中心として学習者自らの経験に基づく意識、及び、学習者の特性に関する調査を行った。(Boku,2009a)においては、2008年4月に行った大学生の英語学習に関するアンケート調査に基づいて結果を報告した。英語学習の開始時期が異なる3つのグループ-小学校低学年以前に英語学習を開始した被験者群(a)、小学校高学年以降に開始した被験者群(b)、及び、中学1年以降に開始した被験者群(c)-の比較において英語の4技能の得意分野に関する調査を行った。(a)群は「リスニング」を、(b)(c)群は「リーディング」を得意であると認識している割合が高いという結果が得られた。一方、中学1年生以降に塾や会話学校等に通った期間については、(a)群が(b)(c)群に比べて長いことが判明した。この調査により、英語学習を開始した時期が学習者の意識に何らかの影響を与えていること、及び、英語学習開始時期と現在の英語力を短絡的に関係づける危険性についても示唆した。また、(Boku,2009b)では、モーティベーションに関する量的データにおいて、pre-, postの一致の割合が低かった被験者群(α)と一致の割合が高かった被験者群(β)のナラティブを抽出し、pre-, post比較を行った。本調査の結果判明したことは以下のとおりである。(α)は、量的データではpre-, post比較において一致の割合が低かったにも関わらず、ナラティブ部分においては、pre, postで繰り返し特定のキーワードを反復的に用いているケースが示された。一方、(β)については、量的データでpre-, postで一致していた場合でも、ナラティブ部分がその同じ時期に、必ずしも一致したキーワードを反復的に使用しているわけではないということがわかった。さらに、キーワードを用いて学習者の個別性に関する分析報告も行った。Boku, M.(2009a, August).
