本研究の目的は、言語固有の特質で扱うべきものと、認知機構一般の原理に還元すべき特性との作業分担がどうなっているかを、削除現象の観点から明らかにすることによって、言語理論の深化に寄与することにある。24年度はその準備段階として、削除現象の事実の収集と他分野への応用を視野に入れた整理・一般化に取り組んだ。当初は、削除を照応表現の一種とみなし様々な削除現象を言語的先行詞にのみ依存する場合（表層照応）と文脈にも依存する場合(深層照応)とに分けたHankamer and Sag (1976)の分類を批判的に検討した上で、テストの洗練と新たな一般化を模索した。しかしながら、事実の取集の過程で、削除現象のデータには干渉要因が多く新たに一般化を生み出すことは困難であることが分かった。このため方針を変更し、Hankamer and Sag(1976)の分類を部分修正する形で再検討した。その結果、削除の構造上の認可と削除の復元のメカニズムが、言語計算の単位であるフェイズおよびフェイズの移送領域と密接な関連があることが示唆された。具体的には、従来深層照応に分類されていた無形輔文照応 (Null Complement Anaphora)に関しては、フェイズが構造上の認可および削除の復元に関与していること、表層照応に分類されていた間接疑問縮約(sluicing)、動詞句削除、単一要素残置 (stripping)に関しては、フェイズの移送領域が、構造上の認可及び復元に関与しているという結果が得られた。
