本研究は、慢性病患者がターミナル期においてどのようなとまどいを持ち、そのとまどいをどのように乗り越えているのかを明らかにし、慢性病患者・家族がターミナル期におけるとまどいを乗り越えられるよう支援することのできる看護実践モデルの開発をすることを目的とした。平成24年度は先行研究である第1段階研究（ターミナルケアを実践している看護師のとまどいと乗り越えの実態調査）をもとにインタビューガイドを作成し、第2段階研究としてターミナル期慢性病患者の家族がとまどいを乗り越えるプロセスの解明することを具体的な目的として実施した。研究実施内容は慢性病患者の家族8名を対象に病気が発症し亡くなるまでの間、家族はどのようなとまどい（介護する中で生じた困ったこと、悩み、無力感、やるせなさ）が生じ、そのとまどいをどのようなプロセスを経て乗り越えていったかを自由に語ってもらう半構成的面接を行なった。1回の面接時間は60分、個室で1対1の面接を行ない、面接内容は承諾を得てICレコーダーに録音した。また、面接時の研究参加者の表情やしぐさなど細かい様子について観察したことをメモに記録した。本研究を実施するに当たりインタビューの内容や方法についての内的妥当性を保証するためにプレテストをし、それにより得られたデータからインタビューガイド・面接方法が適切であったか評価・修正しデータ収集を実施した。平成25年度と平成26年度は平成24年度にデータ収集した内容を質的統合法（KJ法）を用いて分析した。その結果、家族のとまどいとその乗り越え方が明らかになった。この第2段階研究の結果を基にして、平成27年度は第3段階研究であるターミナル期慢性病患者がとまどいを乗り越えるプロセスの解明を実施していく予定であった。
