Marine geophysical investigation of Post-Permian to recent structural evolution of the western Baltic Sea

We propose to investigate the Post-Triassic to Recent structural evolution of the north-eastern Central European Basin-System and the transition towards the Baltic Shield in the western Baltic sea. The applied methods include marine geophysical investigations as reflection seismics and potential field measurements. Together with the present data the entire Bay of Kiel can be surveyed. The project focuses on the geometry and activity of tectonic lineaments within the Tertiary and Cretaceous sequences with special emphasis on their relationship to Paleozoic structures like the Ringkfbing-Fyn High and the Trans-European Fault. We further aim at the analysis of the interplay between the causative processes of the reactivation of Paleozoic lineaments and recent processes like sedimentation, holocinesis and glaciation periods. All results will be linked to and compared with industrial and scientific onshore seismic and borehole data, which have been released for the SPP. The marine data foster onshore data sets compiled by other working groups and will serve as homogenous 21/2-D data for later dynamic modeling. by mapping recent tectonic activity we will establish a basis for later risk assessment for pipelines, wires, or bridges.
