本研究の目的は、和歌・説話・物語に見られる古代・中世の日本人の規範意識を「恩」概念に着目することにより探究することであった。本研究では、『萬葉集』の和歌および『日本霊異記』の説話に見られる恩概念の受容基盤を明らかにした。その過程で、「内」と「外」という概念によりこれらを分析することが有効であることを発見した。この研究成果は、研究論文「規範と内外―和歌・説話に基づく実践の現場の考究―」(筑波大学哲学・思想学会『哲学・思想論叢』第32号、2014年1月31日、P. 1～18)にまとめることができた。奈良期の『萬葉集』巻二十に収録された大伴家持の喩族歌は、ある集団(大伴氏)が同一性・均質性を保持できなくなったとき、その内部から、「われわれ」の在るべき姿を規範として提起したものである。しかし、家持による「内」からの「内」の規範の提唱は、実現することなく理想にとどまった。一方、『日本霊異記』に見られる平安初期の説話からは、従来の生活者の中にはない新たな規範の移入と受容をうかがい知ることができる。例えば、中巻29～30において、仏教的因果論は、「外」の世界から到来した行基がもたらした<新たな規範>である。これは「内」のみに限定された規範ではなく、生類全般を包括する類的論理である。しかし、実践の現場においては、「内」の<新たな規範>として受容され、その中にある者が「内」を構成し、それ以外の「外」が生ずる。ここに論理内容と実際の現場においての受容の内実が明らかとなった。「恩」概念はこの仏教的因果論と密接なかかわりを有すると思われる。本研究の意義は、思想内容にとどまらず、思想(規範)を提起する者と受容する者との関係や、その受容の内実を明晰にしたことと、和歌と説話という異なる表現形式の文献を一つの研究の俎上にのせたことにある。
