平成22年度において、申請者はイスラームの根幹を成している聖典クルアーンが、神秘家を意味するスーフィーや初期の注釈者たちによっていかに解釈されてきたかについて取り組んだ。まず、クルアーン解釈の形成過程を理解するために、井筒俊彦の著作に基づいて、クルアーンの「話し言葉」から「書き言葉」へというテクスト化に伴う解釈の革新について理解した。こうした井筒俊彦のクルアーン解釈については、カナダ・トロント大学で開催された国際宗教学会(IAHR)で英語での研究発表を行ない、さらに、"Izutsu's Hermeneutical Perspectives of the Qur'anic Interpretation"として、英語論文が刊行された。こうした点を軸に、初期スーフィズムを代表するジュナイドと、初期のクルアーン解釈を代表するタバリーのアラビア語文献について取り組んだ。まず、ジュナイドは神と人間が最初に交わした契約とみなされている「原初の契約」(Q7:172)と呼ばれているクルアーンの一節をキーワードに、契約以前の状況を「無始の永遠」という言葉で表現した。ジュナイドを始めとする神秘家は、この神と人間が契約によって分かたれる以前の状況を、神的合一の極致とみなした。ジュナイドのアラビア語文献を読み解くことで、申請者は初期スーフィズムを代表する「原初の契約」というモチーフから彼の神秘理論を理解した。こうした内容は論文「ジュナイドの『原初の契約』におけるファナーとバカー」(『オリエント』)として掲載され、日本宗教学会、日本オリエント学会の場で研究発表が行なわれた。さらにタバリーに関して、この「原初の契約」についての解釈は、運命論やこの契約が交わされたときの状況について預言者ムハンマドや彼の教友たちが話した伝承(ハディース)を伴う形で行なわれていた。また、この一節をめぐって、イスラームの死生観と関わる議論がなされている。この点については、論文「イスラームの死生観-タバリーのクルアーン解釈における二つの生と二つの死-」として刊行された。また、タバリーのクルアーン解釈の方法や問題意識についても、印度学宗教学会や研究会などで発表を行なった。
