In epitaxial perpendicular recording media, a Ru intermediate layer thickness and an FeCo soft underlayer thickness was greatly reduced and the recording performance was maintained. The size of CoPt grains in the recording layer was about 5 nm in diameter. In-plane structure of the recording layer was controlled by using a nanoparticle-like underlayer. The medium noise was greatly decreased at all recording densities. High writability and reproduced output was obtained. The foundation of preparation of porus structure due to the control of a regular arrangement by using nanoparticles was laid.
