文献検討を行った結果、看護・リハビリテーション・障害者福祉領域において、当事者自らが力を発揮する「セルフ・エンパワメント」 (安梅 : 2004) という概念を用いた研究は見当たらなかった。類似の研究として、千田(2007)は「生きる意欲を再生する」という概念を用いて研究を行い、在宅脳卒中障害者の「生きる意欲を再生する体験」の意味として、1. 障害のある自分に生きる力を発見し、生きようと決意する、2. 他者との関係が生きる意欲を支える、3. 他者や世界との新たな関わり方を見出す、ことを明らかにした。しかしながら、脳卒中患者を対象に、生きる意味を生み出すセルフ・エンパワメントに焦点を当てた研究は、依然少ないのが現状である。そこで本研究の研究計画を見直し、まずは壮年期脳卒中患者が、退院後の生活を準備や生活において、どのような時期や状況、場面で自らが力を発揮したり、主体的な在宅療養を感じることができたのか、を明らかにすることとした。そしで、壮年期脳卒中患者が感じたり、体験している「セルフ・エンパワメント」を明らかにした上で、セルフ・エンパワメントを高める看護ケアを検討・構築し、看護援助のモデル化を試みることとした。そのため、まず壮年期脳卒中患者にインタビューを行うこととした。インタビュー方法には、日常生活の延長線上の「現実そのまま」の情報に接近でき、対象者同士がお互いの発言によって交互作用が得られ、話題が発展されていく点を生かし、フォーカスグループインタビュー法を参考にしながら、インタビューガイドを作成していくこととした。
