To investigate the effects of dental intervention on self-esteem, oral condition, and concern for oral health among abused children admitted to the children's center. We examined 65 (34 boys, 31 girls ; age range, 2-15 years) children's oral condition and instructed tooth-brushing. Self-esteem was examined using Pope's five-scale test of self-esteem for children. Before discharge, the children completed questionnaires about their concern for their oral health.The reasons for admission were child abuse and neglect in 45 children, domestic violence against the mother in 20, nursing in 11, delinquency in 7, truancy in 2, and other reasons in 3. Mean self-esteem score was 59.16±14.54 in residents (n=43 ; age range, 7-15 years) and 73.92±16.81 in the outpatient control group (n=102), which was a statistically significant difference (p<0.01). Thirty-five of the 65 residents (54%) needed treatment for caries. Of these 35 residents, 24 (69%) were abused children and 11 (31%) were admitted due to other reasons. Although the abused children had low self-esteem, after dental intervention, positive answers regarding oral health were obtained. The present findings suggest that dental interventions might be effective for improving the self-esteem of abused children.

目的探讨牙科干预对儿童中心受虐儿童自尊、口腔状况和口腔健康的影响。我们检查了65名儿童(男34名，女31名；年龄范围2-15岁)的口腔状况，并指导他们刷牙。自尊是通过波普的儿童自尊五量表测试来检验的。出院前完成口腔健康问题问卷调查，入院原因依次为虐待忽视儿童45例，家庭暴力侵害母亲20例，护理11例，违法犯罪7例，逃学2例，其他原因3例。社区居民(n=43，年龄7~15岁)自尊评分平均为59.16±14.54，门诊对照组(n=102)自尊评分为73.92±16.81，差异有统计学意义(p&lt；0.01)。65名居民中有35人(54%)需要治疗龋齿。在这35名居民中，24名(69%)是受虐待的儿童，11名(31%)是因其他原因入院的。虽然被虐待儿童的自尊较低，但经过牙科干预后，对口腔健康的回答是肯定的。目前的研究结果表明，牙科干预可能有效地提高受虐儿童的自尊。
