Grass-root level food security in Bhutan and direction of aid policy aiming at self-reliance

This research have examined the situation of food security at the grass-roots level in Bhutan focusing on chilli which is indispensable to Bhutanese diet, and proposes policies and direction of aid assistance which enhances people's food security in sustainable manner. The research particularly finds that people use two modes of transaction, i.e. barter and transaction at market places with cash, to obtain chillies strategically based on their recognition of strengths and weaknesses of each mode of transaction.
