Research on behavior and environmental risk of veterinary drugs in water environment

The water quality tests were conducted in rivers in dairy region in Hokkaido to reveal the behavior of veterinary drugs in water environment. Sulfamonomethoxine, which is commonly used for cow, was detected in every investigation spot with the concentration of from several tens to several hundreds ng/l. The concentrations tended to be high in the region of having large number of farm animals. However, there was no relation between the concentration of sulfamonomethoxine and river flow rate or nutrient salts. Further research is needed to reveal the mechanism of the runoff of veterinary drugs.
