The Poetics of City, Suburbs, and Country and the English Romantics

This study aimed at elucidating the significance of the theme of 'the city, the suburbs, and the country as cultural topoi' from the various viewpoints of literature, aesthetics, theology, geography, hygienics and medicine. In so doing, this study tried. both diachronically and synchronically. to shed light on the dynamics in which the literary works produced by the dwellers of the city, the suburbs and the country in the Romantic era influenced each other in terms of man's relationship with nature. As a result, it was clarified how the two main schools of the English Romanticism. the Lake School and the Cockney School. showed their antagonistic, and at the same time sympathetic, attitudes towards the literary productions of each other which are characterized by their striking 'ambiguity'.
