项目摘要

本研究は明治20〜30年代における日本近代の風景を、ひとまず'Picturesque'なものと規定した上で、江戸名所図会・山岳紀行などとの関連から通時的に、またイギリス・ロマン派、ひいては透谷・藤村などの同時代作家らとの影響関係という観点から共時的に検証することを所期の目的としていた。結果として、具体的には、まず'Sublime'(崇高美)から'Picturesque'(絵様美)へというロマン派審美感の変遷が、明治20〜30年代の日本においては、山岳に崇高(神聖)美を認めようとする透谷的風景から武蔵野に錯雑とした絵になる風景を見出そうとした独歩的風景への展開と正確に呼応することを発見した。より通時的にその変遷を辿るならば、自由民権運動の嵐に直接的に遭遇した透谷においては、その挫折感を解放すべき〈幻境〉として山岳風景が想定されていたのに対し、独歩においては、あらかじめ失意を前提とした喪失の代償として風景が見え始めているといえる。政治の季節の終焉に風景の発見を重ね合わせる観点そのものは、加藤典洋氏の一連の日本近代論から学んだものであるが、今回の研究の副産物として、明治30年代以降と1970年代以降の類似性・反復性という大きな枠組みに想到している。順序が前後するが、1970年以降の〈喪失〉について村上春樹を例に論じた(『國文学』誌上、裏面参照)。なお、透谷的'Sublime'から独歩的'Picturesque'への展開については、〈政治〉に加えて〈女性〉というファクターが失われていくことも大きな問題点である。実は、'Pituresque'的風景の源流ともいうべきワ-ズワスにおいても他者としての女性存在は妹によって代行されており、たとえば同じくラスキンに傾倒した夏目漱石における絵画と女性というモチーフとも絡めて、今後の検討課題としたいと考えている。
