ヒトゲノムの計画のDNA配列の解読が完了し、遺伝医療の対象は特定の疾患を有する人だけではなくなった。かつては羊水検査などの出生前検査後に染色体異常が判明したり、出生後に先天異常が判明したときなど限られた場面においてのみ「遺伝」に直面することが多かった。しかし現代では、将来起こりうる疾患の可能性を予測したり、体質にあわせた治療を考えるオーダーメイド医療の実現が期待されており、遺伝医療の対象は一般市民に広がっている。遺伝医療に関する意思決定においては、医療の対象となる人の意思が尊重され、納得できる意思決定であることが重要である。この意思決定の際には、ヘルスリテラシーが関わってくる。ヘルスリテラシーとは、遺伝医療に限らず、健康面での適切な意思決定をするために必要な情報を調べて、整理し、理解して、効果的に利用する個人的能力や意欲のことである。情報を調べたり、整理・理解する際には医療者の対応や提供する情報の質や量が関わってくるが、対象者の遺伝に関する基礎的知識や遺伝や命に対する価値観も大きく関わってくる。そのため、一般市民への遺伝に関連した教育が重要な役割を担うと考えられる。本研究の目的は、一般市民を対象とした遺伝教育プログラムを展開し、その評価を明らかにすることである。全体構想として、第I段階では現代の遺伝医療に関わる医療者が一般市民にもとめる遺伝に関する知識および国内外の遺伝教育の実施状況を明らかにし、第II段階では遺伝教育プログラムを開発、第III段階では遺伝教育プログラムを実施・評価することとした。平成21年度は第I段階である国内外の遺伝教育の現状を把握した。医学・看護学・教育学・社会学分野のデータベースを用いた文献検討、Web上の情報検討、国内で出版されている遺伝に関する書籍における遺伝に関する記述の検討をした。また、国内外の学会・講演会に参加し、日本で遺伝教育が行われてこなかった歴史的背景や、遺伝関連学会が中等教育での「遺伝」の充実に向けて行っている取組等を学ぶことができた。またアメリカ人類遺伝学会ではアメリカの遺伝教育の現状についても学ぶことができた。
