本研究の目的は、モラルの進化的起源を解明することである。フサオマキザルは、報酬分配場面において、「不公平感」や「他者への配慮」といったモラルを支える重要な高次感情を示すことで知られる。本年度は、最後通牒ゲームの手続きを利用し、分配者と被分配者がそれぞれ分配の拒否権または提案権をもつ、よりインタラクティブで双方向的な報酬分配場面を設定した。最後通牒ゲームでは、提案者が報酬分配に関する提案をし、応答者がその提案を受諾するか、拒否するかを決定する。応答者が受諾すれば、互いに提案どおりの報酬を得ることができる。一方、応答者が拒否すると、互いに報酬を得られない。そうした場面で、パートナーの意思決定はサルの「不公平感」や「他者への配慮」の表出に影響するか、を検討した。提案者と応答者は対面し、その間に2つの餌箱と拒否箱を1つ設置した。提案者は2つの餌箱から1つを提案した。応答者は、その提案を受諾する場合は、餌箱の引き出しを引いて報酬を分配し、拒否する場合は、拒否箱を引いて能動的に拒否するか、何も操作せずに制限時間内を過ごして受動的に拒否した。応答者が拒否をすると、応答者自身も提案者も報酬を得ることができなかった。餌箱の中身は、報酬の配置パターンによって異なっていた。その結果、彼らの「他者への配慮」には自身が払うコストの有無が影響する一方で、パートナーの意思決定はコストのかかる「他者への配慮」や「不公平感」の表出を促進すること、特に意図があるときに、パートナーからの不公平な提案に対して自身の報酬を犠牲にしてまで拒否する形で、「不公平感」の表出が促進されることが示された。フサオマキザルは、モラルを支える「不公平感」や「他者への配慮」といった高次感情を持つだけでなく、自身の報酬の価値の保証や他者の意思決定に応じて、その感情を柔軟に表出することが明らかになった。
