本研究の目的は、日本語・英語の両方で書かれ、多様性を有する日系アメリカ人の文芸活動の変遷を総合的に捉えることである。研究対象地域は、初期移民地の頃から文芸活動が継続的に盛んであった西海岸とし、歴史的連続性を見るという立場から、文芸活動の始まった19世紀末から1940年代までの比較的長い時間を取り扱う。その際、変わりゆく日米関係や日系社会の状況下で作家・文芸人が模索した文学がどのようなものだったのかに留意するものである。以上の問題意識にもとづき、1.初期移民地から1920年代2.1920年代から1930年代3.強制収容期(1941年から1945年)4.戦後と時代区分した。1.に関しては昨年度小論にまとめた。本年度は2から4.を小論にまとめることに集中した。論文作成の過程で資料の整理、分析、インタビューの文字化などを並行して行った。研究成果の一部を『社会システム研究』第14号で発表予定である。これまで日本語・英語の両方の文芸活動を日系アメリカ史、または日米関係史に沿って総合的に捉える研究は筆者の知る限りほとんどなされていなかった。本研究を進めたことで、これまで見過ごされてきた日本語による文学活動と英語による文学活動の関係性や連続性が明らかになったと思われる。戦後のアジア系アメリカ文学の興隆により、日系日本語文学の存在は影を潜め、日系アメリカ文学の起源として意識されることが少なかったように考えられるが、戦後の日系英語文学の発展の下地には戦前からの日系日本語文学の基盤があるということが明確になったと思われる。

The purpose of this study is to capture the diversity of Japanese language and English language, and to integrate Japanese language and English language activities. The research object is to study the historical continuity of cultural and cultural activities in the west coast of China from the end of the 19th century to the 1940s. Under the circumstances of Japanese society, writers, writers and scholars should pay attention to literature. The above problems are divided into three parts: 1.
