研究期間初年度にあたる本年度は、ハワイの日系文学、特に一世から二世の世代の日系作家による文学作品を研究の対象とした。日系一世の作家による文学作品については、インターネットによる文献検索などをはじめとする様々な手段・方法による収集を試みたが、日本国内はもちろんのこと、現地ハワイにおいても入手が極めて困難であることが判明した。その一因として、日本語を読める日系一世世代の老齢化と数的減少が著しく、したがって、多くの戦前の新聞や同人誌に記載された日本語による一世の文学作品(俳句・短歌・随筆・日記等)を現地で正当に評価できる人が少なくなってしまったことが大いに影響し、現在、入手できる形で残っているものが極めて少なくなっていることが挙げられる。しかしながら、現在、ハワイで出版されているハワイの作家による文学作品のアンソロジーを数冊入手し、その中に幾つかの日系一世の作家による文学作品の英訳を発見したのは現時点での収穫と言えよう。日系二世の作家による作品については、1978年にハワイ初の本格的文芸誌として創刊され、現在にいたるまで数多くの作家を世に送り出しハワイ文壇の中心をなしている雑誌Bamboo Ridgeのバックナンバーを70冊あまり入手できたことは、非常に大きな収穫である。それに基づく詳細な分析・評価については、数多くの歴史的・文化的背景に関する諸文献を参照しつつ、来年度に行うつもりであるが、ハワイの文壇において、アジア系の作家、特に日系作家の存在が非常に大きかったことが明確になった。
